Damaged Bumper? Get it Fixed

Damaged Bumper? Get it Fixed

There is no doubt that bumpers serve their purpose by protecting your vehicle, and you, from more serious damage. However, scratched or dented bumpers don’t just look unsightly, they can affect your vehicle’s resale value too. If your bumper bears the marks of that tight parking space, or the misjudged kerb, repairing the damage doesn’t have to be expensive.

You may think that you need a whole new bumper, but a trustworthy body shop will be able to give you a reasonable quote on bumper repairs, leaving your vehicle looking as good as new.

Claiming on Insurance

Depending on the source of the bumper damage, and your insurance policy, you may be able to claim for bumper repair or replacement on your insurance.

  • If your bumper was damaged in a collision, it should be covered by your policy, provided you have collision coverage.
  • If the damage occurred as the result of something else, for example a falling branch, you will only be covered if you have fully comprehensive insurance.
  • If you are hit by another car, and it is not your fault, then the cost of repairing any damaged caused will be covered by the other driver’s insurance.

It is important to be aware that claiming for your damaged bumper may require you to pay an excess fee (this will be specified in your vehicle insurance policy). Additionally, if you make a claim on your insurance, you may lose your no claims bonus and be subjected to higher insurance premiums when you renew your policy.

Get a Quote

In the first instance, it is advisable to visit a local garage and get a quote for your bumper repair or replacement. If the quote is not much more than the excess stated in your insurance policy, it may not be worth claiming for the damage on your insurance. If you consider that your first quote is much higher than you imagined, don’t be afraid to go to another recommended garage or car body shop to secure a second quote. This will give you a good idea of the costs of repair and help you to make an informed decision about whether to repair your bumper, and whether to claim it on insurance.

It is important to use a local garage or car body shop that you know you can rely on. Ask around for recommendations locally, or look for a reviewed car repair specialist on Trust A Garage; there is no substitute for the first-hand experience of others.
