Hybrid and Electric Car Servicing: What You Need To Know

Hybrid and Electric Car Servicing: What You Need To Know

As more drivers make the switch to hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), questions around servicing and maintenance are becoming increasingly common. While these cars are designed to be efficient and reliable, they still need regular attention to keep them in top condition. Understanding how servicing differs from a petrol or diesel vehicle can help you save money, extend vehicle life, and avoid unnecessary surprises.

Do electric and hybrid cars need servicing?

In a word, yes! All vehicles need servicing, but the requirements differ. Traditional cars rely heavily on oil, filters, clutches and exhausts, many of which require regular replacement. Electric cars have fewer moving parts and no oil changes, which generally means less routine maintenance. Hybrids sit somewhere in between, combining a petrol engine with electric components, so they need a blend of both types of checks.

What gets checked in an EV service?

During a standard EV service at a UK garage, mechanics will inspect:

  • Battery health - the most valuable part of an EV. Technicians check the cooling system, connections, and software.
  • Brake system - EVs use regenerative braking, which reduces wear but still requires fluid checks and occasional pad replacement.
  • Tyres and suspension - EVs are heavier due to their batteries, so tyres and suspension components may wear faster.
  • Electrical systems - software updates, charging ports, and wiring are inspected for faults.
  • Cabin filters and fluids - while EVs don’t need engine oil, they do use coolant and sometimes gearbox fluid, which needs to be maintained.

Hybrid servicing: a bit of both!

Hybrids need the same checks as EVs as well as petrol engine maintenance such as oil changes, spark plugs, and exhaust checks. Because the engine may run less frequently, it’s important not to skip these; stale oil or neglected components can cause problems.

How often should you service an EV or hybrid?

Most UK manufacturers recommend a service every 12 months or 10,000–12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Even if you drive fewer miles, annual servicing ensures that the software, battery, and safety systems are up to date.

MOTs for EVs and hybrids

In the UK, EVs and hybrids still need an MOT after three years, just like conventional cars. The main difference is that EVs are exempt from emissions testing, but all other safety checks such as brakes, tyres, suspension, and lights, remain the same.

Benefits of regular servicing

Peace of mind and resale value aren’t the only benefits of regular servicing; by keeping your vehicle in great condition, you’ll be able to make sure your car remains under warranty, and you’ll make it run more efficiently, too.

Servicing a hybrid or electric car in the UK isn’t complicated, but it does require specialist knowledge. Not all garages are qualified to work on high-voltage systems, so it’s important to choose one that is trained and equipped for EVs. By keeping on top of routine checks, you’ll not only protect your investment but also enjoy smoother, safer, and more efficient driving.
