New Year, New Family? Top Tips for Choosing the Right Family Car

Just like homes, as our circumstances change, so do our expectations of our vehicles. Home working, the introduction of ULEZ in different areas and cities, and growing or changing families are just a few of the things that may make you decide it is time to make some changes. However, finding the ideal car to suit your family can present a whole host of challenges. Here’s what you need to consider before you commit.

Safety – if you were a little maverick before having kids, the chances are that now you are responsible for young lives, you have suddenly become the health and safety inspector. Before you buy a car you can check its safety via its Euro NCAP score. This rates the safety of vehicles across four categories: adult, child, vulnerable road users, and safety assist and gives a straightforward star rating.

Entertainment- any parent knows that nothing makes a long journey longer than a crying or bored child or two (or three or four!). Whilst boredom is good for the soul, being able to deploy a favourite film, audio book or a good old fashioned sing along helps considerably. To this end, Bluetooth, a good radio and charging points in the rear of the vehicle could be lifesavers.

Space – when it comes to space, you need to consider not just you and the kids, but their friends as well as any pets that may join your family – now or in the future. If you have two or more children and anticipate plenty of school or club runs, a 7-seater may be the right option for you. Need to use a car seat? Then Isofix may make your life easier. If you do opt for a 7-seater, make sure that the extra seats will be big enough to accommodate growing kids and that you are left with as much boot space as you need – you need to fit the pram (dog, skateboard, luggage) somewhere, after all…

Budget – if money was no object, then we would probably all be purring onto the school run in a Tesla. So budget must be considered. How much have you got to spend now – and in the future – to buy and maintain your vehicle. Generally, a more mainstream, higher end vehicle will require less work at the garage and the work will cost less due to high availability of parts. This means that the bargain imported vehicle may not be such a bargain in the longer term.

Economy – likewise running costs, tax and other long term financial implications need to influence your decision as opting for the car that is cheapest now will almost certainly backfire. If you are not sure which car is right for you and your changing circumstances, shop around; ask friends and colleagues their opinion and head to your local car dealership to see what is available at your budget. A couple of test drives should help you to find your dream car.

Once you have your vehicle, make sure you maintain it properly at a local garage to keep costs down and function high.
