The Car Owner’s Toolbox Checklist

The Car Owner’s Toolbox Checklist

As with any type of DIY, a car toolbox can take a while to accumulate. However, with our wealth of experience at Trust A Garage we have a pretty good idea of what you will need for basic car maintenance. Whether you're a new vehicle owner or an old hand, check out our vehicle toolkit.

Duct Tape

Who doesn’t love a bit of duct (or gaffer) tape? Available in a range of colours from the standard black and silver to lime green, zebra print and even floral, duct tape is a toolbox staple for any self-respecting, practical person. It’s easy to tear, incredibly adhesive and water-resistant – which is why even the F1 teams use it to patch up their race cars.

Lubricant

If it moves and it shouldn’t, use duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should – reach for the lubricant. Water Displacement, 40th Formula (also known as WD-40) was created in 1953 and has been a toolbox staple ever since. There are few mechanical issues that can’t be fixed with a spray of WD-40!

Cable Ties

If duct tape doesn’t quite do it, cable ties will! The ultimate quick-fix, cable ties are versatile and incredibly strong. It’s always useful to keep a pack in the glove compartment (make sure you have scissors or a pen knife too, as cable ties are virtually impossible to break without them!)

Spanner and Socket Sets

Nothing says that you mean business like a shiny box containing a full set of spanners or ratchets and sockets. They come in useful, too. In fact, if you only buy two things to tend to your new car, a good set of spanners and ratchets should come top of the list.

Fluids

This is a no brainer – try to keep water and oil in your car, just in case. There are few things more embarrassing than getting caught short of coolant, windscreen fluid, or oil. Other than running out of fuel – if you are a forgetful vehicle owner, a jerrycan may come in handy for the walk of shame to the nearest garage.

Torch

This one needs little explanation – have you ever tried fixing a car in the dark?

Rags

Yes, rags. An old t-shirt, dish cloths, or a small towel. If you do break down and need to check the oil or change a tyre, you’ll be grateful that you stuck that old t-shirt in your toolkit.

If you do break down and you’re not sure what to do, contact your recovery service or check our directory to find a trusted local mechanic. For more top tips on vehicle maintenance, follow us on Twitter or Facebook. What’s your toolbox must-have? Let us know!
