The Top Ten: Ways To Make Your Car Greener Part One

We are all aware that driving isn’t the best for the environment but, sadly, for many people it is a necessity. Of course, we would all love to choose ultra-low emission or electric vehicles but for the majority of drivers, that is just not financially viable at this point.

It is hoped that as the second-hand electric and hybrid vehicle market grows in a few years, people who want to go green will be able to do so more affordably. In the meantime, if you want to reduce the emissions on your existing vehicle, follow our top ten tips.

Use an engine cleaner

If done every three months, using a cleaning agent can significantly reduce your emissions. Cleaning agents are poured into the fuel tank and help to break down the build up of residue that gathers in a vehicle’s engine over time. This harmful build up can reduce the efficiency of a vehicle as well as increasing its emissions. The recommended use of cleaning agents varies according to the product; if you are in doubt, take it to your local garage and ask for assistance.

Buy the best fuel

Fuel is a bit like food: if it is cheap, it is likely to contain a few hidden nasties. People often ask if it is really worth paying for premium fuels. Some premium fuels contain a cleaning agent which, over time, will improve performance and reduce emissions. You need to refuel using a premium fuel at least three times before you are likely to notice a difference: try it and see.

Check your tyres

Tyre pressure can have a huge impact on your vehicle’s efficiency as it affects how well your car moves on the road. Not enough air and your vehicle will feel sluggish and heavy; too much can make your vehicle difficult to control.

Change the oil

Don’t wait for the oil light to come on, check your oil levels regularly and speak to your mechanic about the need for a full oil change. The oil is often overlooked but it keeps your engine running smoothly by lubricating the parts, cooling it, keeping it clean and preventing undue wear and tear. For the sake of an oil change, you can keep your vehicle’s performance tip top.

Check your air filter

The what?! The air filter cleans the air going into your engine; if it’s clogged with dust/dirt, leaves or goodness knows what else, less air is able to get through, so the engine won't run as efficiently. The vehicle manual will tell you how often the air filter should be changed, but this will usually be done as part of a full service.
