Keeping your engine healthy is the most important thing you can do for your vehicle. Many people do not know how to keep the engine healthy and as a result of this – do not do it at all. This week we take a look at some of the ways you can keep your vehicle's engine healthy.

Changing the oil regularly

Changing the oil is the most important thing to do. It helps the vehicle to stay lubricated, keeping the engine cool. Typically, you should change the oil every several thousand miles, however it doesn’t hurt to check it more regularly, especially if you are about to head out on a long trip. If the oil is not regularly changed, this can lead to long term engine damage.

Keep the engine breathing

It's important to make sure that air flow into the car is constant. Cars need a constant flow of air to keep the engine cool. The best way to check this is to check the air filter and see if it is dirty. If your air filter is damaged or completely dirty beyond cleaning, replace it with a new one.

Checking for leaks

Spotting a leak can often be worrying. If you have a leak it is very important to identify where the leak is coming from. It could be anything from the oil tank to power steering fluid. If you do find a leak on your vehicle, it is strongly advisory that you take it to your local garage mechanic for repair as soon as you can.

Keep your petrol tank topped up

Petrol and diesel has an amount of sediment and dirt that will eventually settle in the bottom of your tank. This is caught by the fuel filter. However if you do not regularly top up your tank, large amounts of this dirt can all come at once, possibly damaging the engine and fuel lines.

Don’t ignore your check engine light

Modern cars are full of computing hardware and do a very good job at reporting a problem to a driver. When your check engine light comes on, the good news is that it may not be a big problem, but you should consult your local garage just to be sure. To help protect your engine, you can perform a diagnostic check to get further insights to what the underlying problems could be.
